How to prepare for a house cleaning visit

Eight simple steps to get the most out of a professional house cleaning: tidying, pets, access, utilities, A/C, allergies and special requests.

By Pro Help Cleaning Services ·

A little preparation lets your cleaning team spend the visit actually cleaning. These are the same things we ask Pro Help clients to think about before we arrive.

1. Pick up personal items

Clear papers, toys, clothes and dishes from counters, tables and floors. Cleaners can wipe around a few things, but every item that has to be moved is time not spent scrubbing. If there are rooms you do not want touched, say so.

2. Put away valuables and fragile pieces

Jewelry, cash, important documents and fragile or sentimental objects are best stored away before any service visit. It protects your things and removes any worry for both sides.

3. Plan for your pets

We love animals, and we also want them safe. While we work, doors open and close and cleaning products and equipment are out. A separate room, crate or a walk with a family member keeps pets calm and makes sure nobody slips out the front door. Share any special instructions — feeding, nervous pets, rooms they must stay out of.

4. Sort out access

If you will not be home, decide how the team gets in: a key, a lockbox or a door code. Tell us about gates, parking restrictions, stairs or steep driveways — common in hillside neighborhoods like Mount Washington. If you have an alarm system, share the instructions ahead of time.

5. Make sure utilities are on

Water, electricity and hot water make a big difference, especially for move-in and move-out cleanings in empty homes where service may have been paused.

6. Keep the A/C on when it is hot

Cleaning is physical work. On hot Southern California days, keeping the air conditioning on during the visit — somewhere in the low 70s °F — keeps the team safe from heat stress and keeps the work at its best.

7. Mention allergies and product preferences

If anyone in the home is sensitive to certain products or scents, or you prefer specific products on certain surfaces (natural stone, hardwood, stainless steel), tell us when you book.

8. Share your priorities

Is there a room guests will see first? A shower that needs extra attention? Add-ons such as inside the fridge or oven? Telling us in advance lets us plan the time — see what is included in a standard house cleaning and a deep cleaning.

One more thing: tell us how it went

Feedback after the visit is the fastest way to make the next one even better, especially if you are on a recurring schedule.
